It Came From The Youtubes!: The Christopher Handley Case

Okay, to say this is a touchy case is an understatement. Look, I would hope all of our listeners are against cp. However, is that what this case is really about? This case may just be about a guy who had creepy tastes and would eventually harm a child and should be jailed for it, but I just can't buy it! Almost all of us can say that cp is wrong in any way you present it and at the same time we all can say that censoring art is a fast track to fascism. That being said, here we are and the government has made a stand on the topic whether it be just or otherwise. What I really want to know is what evidence was used against Mr. Handley. Was it hardcore or otherwise? One of the examples I heard used was "The Gothic Lolita Bible", which is a non-pornographic, fashion magazine. This alone has me asking questions. However, this conviction sets a precedent that cannot be revoked that if our society deems something obscene, be it anime, manga, or otherwise that you will get jail time. I hope this story ends here but they just opened the door to a very slippery slope that has comic publishers worried.

It Came From The Youtubes!: Hard Gay Hoooooooo!

Okay first I want to mention that even if you're a homophobe this guy is hilarious. Razor Ramone also known as "Hard Gay" was a persona created by a comedian in Japan by the name of Masaki Sumitani. He premiered and had most of his appearances on a variety show called Bakusho Mondai. "Hard Gay" would do random acts to improve the local communities from cleaning litter to helping a young man confess his love to a girl while being, well hard gay. To describe these videos do it no justice. This is something you have to just see for yourselves. Unfortunately however I haven't seen anything recent from him for a while now.

Hard Gay Fathers' Day

Hard gay helps the youth of Japan appreciate their dads and even participates in giving gifts to one girls dad.

Hard Gay Cooking for Kids
Hard Gay helps kids get over their fear of certain foods through creative recipes. This would never fly over here in America.

It Came From The Youtubes!: The Caramelldansen

This is nothing new to the fandom. In fact its been around about four years. However, I feel a lot of fans have encountered the their favorite characters online doing the Caramelldansen (or "Uma Uma Dance,") and never really got an explanation as to what this was. The Caramelldansen or "Caramell Dance" refers to both the song heard in the background as well as the dance. In the dance you often see two or more characters with their legs together pivoting their hips left and right while holding their hands over their heads and flapping them forward, as if mimicking cat or rabbit ears. The song heard the background is "The Caramelldansen (Speedycake Remix), by the Swedish band Caramell, from the album Supergott. Now if your wondering why the hell a Swedish song became such a major anime meme, the song and dance were used in the intro to the Popotan PC visual Novel. A GIF of the characters Mai-chan and Mii-chan doing the dance was released online and the rest was history. Soon every other character was seen doing the dance to the poppy song and people were breaking into the dance at conventions.

Caramelldansen Original (Choppy Quality)

This is the original. The quality sucks but I can't find a not crappy version of the video anywhere. For a great quality English version of the video go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A67ZkAd1wmI

Caramell Dansen Random Series

Here is a good example of how many different series have been tapped for characters to do the dance. Don't be fooled however, these are just a fraction of how many of our favorite characters who are "doing the dansen".

Caramelldansen Strikes Otakon

There are lots of videos of people doing the Caramelldansen at cons but I was actually in this crowd when it spontaneously happened. Ah, memories...

It Came From The Youtubes!: Moe Shows that People Who Hate Moe Could Enjoy

OK, let's all face it. Whether you love it or hate it there is far too much moe out there. The Japanese anime industry, desperately trying to create a sure thing to hook the already prepackaged audience of otaku in Japan have been cranking out the same shiny, cutesy, sexually-awkward shows time and time again causing a tsunami of moe to flood over the fan base whether they cared for it in the first place or not. However if this has left you feeling a bit cynical or frustrated. Here's a couple overlooked titles that may interest you.

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan Opening

Many of you may know this show mainly from it's many appearances in the "AMV Hell" AMVs and other comedy compilation style AMVs. The short series features the typical moe scenario: the magical girlfriend. Lovable loser Sakura (Yes, he's a boy named Sakura)lives the typical middle school life until an angel shows up and lives with him. That's really the only set up you get before they hurl the audience into one of the most messed up plots I've ever seen. The magical girl proceeds to playfully torment her host, and every time he annoys her she slaughters the youth with a spiked bat she lovingly calls Excaliborg. Then immediately resurrects him as to not disturb the plot. The show has a "cutesy" presentation coupled with fast-paced, shotgun humor the varies from perverse to macabre and everything wrong in between. It is available now on DVD in the U.S. in sub-only format but there has been an announcement that a Dub version will be released within the year. So if you appreciate dark humor this is worth checking out.

*Warning Spoilers in next video!!!*

Scenes From Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan

Dai Mahou Touge A.K.A. Magical Witch Punie-Chan

Similar to Dokuro-Chan, this show takes a seemingly cookie-cutter moe plot and turns it on it's head. A sweet magical princess comes to our world and enrolls into a school in Japan. She makes friends and and enemies and has to fight off assassins who aim for her spot as next in line for the throne of the magical kingdom. Typical right? Well it turns out that the happy, sweet surface of the magical kingdom is just for show. In truth the princess and all the royal family are actually tyrants who are merciless to those who stand in their way in their conquest for power and domination. Our main character Punie-chan also while often putting on a sweet and loving face is truly lethal when challenged and willing to sacrifice friends and family to ascend to the throne. This show has also been released in Sub-only format on DVD and is now available.
