It Came From The Youtubes!: Moe Shows that People Who Hate Moe Could Enjoy

OK, let's all face it. Whether you love it or hate it there is far too much moe out there. The Japanese anime industry, desperately trying to create a sure thing to hook the already prepackaged audience of otaku in Japan have been cranking out the same shiny, cutesy, sexually-awkward shows time and time again causing a tsunami of moe to flood over the fan base whether they cared for it in the first place or not. However if this has left you feeling a bit cynical or frustrated. Here's a couple overlooked titles that may interest you.

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan Opening

Many of you may know this show mainly from it's many appearances in the "AMV Hell" AMVs and other comedy compilation style AMVs. The short series features the typical moe scenario: the magical girlfriend. Lovable loser Sakura (Yes, he's a boy named Sakura)lives the typical middle school life until an angel shows up and lives with him. That's really the only set up you get before they hurl the audience into one of the most messed up plots I've ever seen. The magical girl proceeds to playfully torment her host, and every time he annoys her she slaughters the youth with a spiked bat she lovingly calls Excaliborg. Then immediately resurrects him as to not disturb the plot. The show has a "cutesy" presentation coupled with fast-paced, shotgun humor the varies from perverse to macabre and everything wrong in between. It is available now on DVD in the U.S. in sub-only format but there has been an announcement that a Dub version will be released within the year. So if you appreciate dark humor this is worth checking out.

Scenes From Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan

Dai Mahou Touge A.K.A. Magical Witch Punie-Chan

Similar to Dokuro-Chan, this show takes a seemingly cookie-cutter moe plot and turns it on it's head. A sweet magical princess comes to our world and enrolls into a school in Japan. She makes friends and and enemies and has to fight off assassins who aim for her spot as next in line for the throne of the magical kingdom. Typical right? Well it turns out that the happy, sweet surface of the magical kingdom is just for show. In truth the princess and all the royal family are actually tyrants who are merciless to those who stand in their way in their conquest for power and domination. Our main character Punie-chan also while often putting on a sweet and loving face is truly lethal when challenged and willing to sacrifice friends and family to ascend to the throne. This show has also been released in Sub-only format on DVD and is now available.
